Coronavirus Handling Statement

Updated: March 12, 2020

With the recent outbreaks of the Coronavirus (COVID-19), Curtis Bay has developed recommended special handling procedures to ensure the safety of our customers, employees and public. As of now, the waste generated from treating a patient with Coronavirus does not require any regulatory special handling.  As a precaution, we have developed the following recommended procedures when handling waste generated from the treatment of suspected or known infected patients.

1) Our recommendation is to double bag the medical waste. In addition, tie biohazard bags before transferring bag or moving biohazardous waste container. It shall be tied so that it is leak proof.  Do not overfill biohazard bag. Secure the lid of (cover with the lid) the biohazardous waste container.

2) All sharps containers should be fully closed and placed in a bag and placed in a container. Preferably, approved single use disposable sharps containers should be used in place of reusable sharps containers.

3) If possible, mark the container with tape or note with the words “Special Handling” or “Suspected COVID-19”. Notify Curtis Bay of the containment and isolation area so our staff can take appropriate precautions.

4) While containers may, at this time, be stored with your normal BIO waste. We ask that you notify Curtis Bay of any container containing COVID-19 prior to pick up to ensure special handling for the protection of healthcare professionals, patients and our employees.
